Firefox: Persona vs Theme

Recently, Mozilla launches a new feature for their Firefox browser, called as Firefox Persona. It’s an addon that allow you to change the skin of your Firefox with your favorite brands. They’ve made a new site for the Persona Gallery where you can download the Personas made by many designers. One thing in my mind when I know this: “What about the Firefox theme?”.

As you know Firefox has already had the Theme Gallery, which is integrated to the Addon Gallery. What about them after the Persona is launched? In their FAQ page, they said that Persona is a special type of theme that changes the look of your browser without changing the navigation buttons, toolbars, and menus, while Themes change the appearance of Firefox.

Still curious, then I made a test: install Persona and a theme at the same time. And here is my conclusion: Persona is made to re-skin your Firefox, it is only capable to give a new background for toolbar and statusbar, while it can’t make any modification to the style of the buttons, tabs and any color like Themes do. Imagine that installing Persona is like making a tattoo to your body, while installing theme is like getting a plastic surgery on it. And happily, you can combine both!

Oh, I just realize that the Personas is much like Google Chrome themes. Hmm..

Open IE-only site using Firefox

Beberapa situs penting di internet, seperti layanan internet banking, memerlukan Internet Explorer agar bisa dibuka. KlikBCA misalnya. Tapi situs yang satu ini masih agak mending. Bila Anda memaksa membuka dengan browser lain, situs tersebut akan tetap terbuka, meski ada beberapa fungsi tambahan yang tidak bisa berjalan baik seperti di IE. Bank Mega yang parah. Jika Anda membuka dengan browser lain, situs ini akan menampilkan pengumuman yang berbunyi “This site can only be opened using IE bla bla bla bla”. Sangat merepotkan memang, apalagi bagi Anda para pengguna Linux.

Ada beberapa hal yang bisa dilakukan untuk mengatasi hal ini:

1. Menginstall OS Microsoft Windows di komputer Anda, baik diinstal secara langsung ke Hard Disk (dual boot) atau diinstal ke Linux Anda dengan software virtual machine seperti VMWare atau VirtualBox. Ini cara yang paling merepotkan memang. Selain lebih susah, mahal (jika menggunakan lisensi asli), juga boros space hard disk.

2. Menginstall program IEs for Linux, yaitu sebuah program yang mengemulasikan IE di Linux Anda. Dengan program ini seolah-olah Anda mempunyai browser IE di Linux, sehingga Anda bisa membuka situs-situs tersebut. Cara ini lebih mudah, tapi masih ada cara yang jauh lebih mudah lagi.

3. Menggunakan Firefox. Caranya? Anda harus menginstall sebuah add-on khusus bernama User Agent Switcher, yang bisa Anda download di sini. Add-on ini berguna untuk menyamarkan Firefox Anda, sehingga ketika Anda mengakses situs-situs tersebut, situs tersebut akan mengira bahwa Anda menggunakan IE. Untuk menggunakannya, setelah menginstall dan merestart Firefox Anda, klik Tools -> User Agent Switcher -> Internet Explorer. Lakukan sebelum Anda mengakses situs tersebut. Dan jangan lupa untuk mengembalikan ke default setelah Anda selesai.

Embedded Flash is Blocked in Firefox

Have you ever installed Adblock plugin to your Firefox? Right, in the plugin preferences, you can set the browser to block the ads and embedded object. But now, the same effect, occurs in my without-Adblock-Firefox. When I open a site that contains an embedded Flash object, a strange gray box hide it, so I can’t interact with the object. First I thought that the Flash Player plugins didn’t work, but the browser didn’t show a notification about the ‘Missing plugin’. I get confused why does it happen? I never installed adblock before. Plugins installed in my Firefox only Firebug and Web Developer, for work purpose.

After I cleared all cookies and the private data, the flash player work well again. One thing that I realized is, the gray box will appears again, after I open a file sharing site, http://indowebster.com. Indeed, in that site there are a lot of ads and Flash object. After those objects loaded, pooff!!, the gray box suddenly appears. Not only in that site tab, but in every tab in my Firefox.

Until now, I didn’t get that problem solved, even after I re-installed the browser. Maybe anyone can help?

Google Chrome sang Istri Muda

Hari Rabu (03/09) dini hari, saya membaca postingan tentang anak baru Ibu Google, yang berwujud browser bernama Chrome. Karena saya kadang-kadang menjadi penyembah Tuhan Google, saya pun tertarik untuk mencoba.

Mulailah saya cari tentang Chrome. Hasilnya, halaman download, http://gears.google.com/chrome/ pun muncul. Err.. tapi kok di posisi ketiga hasil pencarian ya? Di atasnya ada postingan di official blog Google tentang Chrome serta komik penjelasan mengenai Chrome. Bukankah seharusnya ada di peringkat pertama?

Benar saja, saat saya klik halaman download tersebut, saya malah dialihkan ke default page Google. Saya tunggu beberapa saat, sambil kembali nge-plurk, akhirnya halaman tersebut dapat diakses. Sayangnya, proses download tak kunjung dimulai setelah saya menyetujui EULA. Akhirnya dengan sedikit keisengan, saya menemukan bahwa URL file installer tersebut adalah di http://dl.google.com/update2/installers/ChromeSetup.exe. Langsung saja saya rambah url tersebut. Benar saja, Firefox saya langsung mengunduh file bernama ChromeInstaller.exe. Tapi anehnya, setelah selesai dan saya jalankan, tak ada tanda-tanda installer tersebut bekerja.

Sadar ada yang salah, saya coba untuk melakukan pencarian lagi. Dan ternyata halaman downloadnya sudah diganti menjadi http://google.com/chrome/. Hanya dalam beberapa menit, halaman tersebut telah menduduki peringkat pertama pencarian. 😯

Akhirnya saya mengunduh lagi installer tersebut. Dan ternyata, instalasinya masih melakukan proses pengunduhan lagi dari Google, itulah kenapa installernya sangat kecil, hanya sekitar 474,7 kB.

Dan setelah diinstal, yah, boleh jadi saya memang akan jadi berselingkuh dengannya, melanggar apa yang saya ucapkan sebelumnya. Tampilannya cukup simpel dan bersih. Tanpa ada bar-bar yang tidak perlu semacam title bar atau toolbar.

Kelebihan dari Chrome ini sendiri, sesuai yang saya baca di komiknya, adalah multi-proccessing-nya, di mana setiap tab akan memiliki sebuah blok memori tersendiri untuk melakukan pemrosesan. Sehingga ketika salah satu tab down, maka hanya tab itu yang akan ditutup, bukan seluruh aplikasi. Tidak seperti “traditional browser” yang masih multi-thread, yang rawan crash bila salah satu tab down. Itulah kenapa kini address bar, atau yang mereka sebut omnibar, masuk ke dalam area tab.

Selain itu ada beberapa macam keunggulan lain macam incognito, yaitu secure mode yang memungkinkan data-data yang kita pakai selama browsing tidak akan disimpan di komputer.

Google Chrome ini sendiri dibangun dari beberapa project open-source lain, seperti Webkit, yang juga digunakan untuk membangun Safari, (itulah kenapa saat mengunjungi beberapa blog, browser ini dikenali sebagai Safari), V8 technology untuk pemrosesan Javascript.

Ah, untuk penjelasan lebih lanjut silakan baca komiknya atau di Wikipedia saja. Yang jelas dari pengamatan pribadi, browser ini memang sedikit lebih cepat me-render halaman web. Dan saya suka itu. Browser ini juga punya element inspector, seperti kegunaan add-on Firebug di Firefox. Great!

Dan jadilah, saya pun berselingkuh dengan “istri” muda saya ini. 😆

Adbrite Makes Firefox Crashed?

Some days ago, I’ve just joined with AdBrite to get some bucks from internet. After the script was installed, suddenly my Firefox Portable crashed and needs to be closed when I accessed this blog homepage. Sigh, at the moment, I didn’t realize that the cause is the AdBrite script. But after it crashed several times, I started suspecting it.

Recently I get more facts for my idea about that script. When I accessed another blog, http://diary.satchdesign.com/, which also has AdBrite script installed, the browser crashed again. Oh my..

Because of that, I didn’t use my Firefox Portable, which is using original Firefox version 3.0.1, to access those blogs. I had to go back to my old habit for using Flock 1.2.5, which is using Firefox 2.0.0.16.

I’ve tried to Google about that, but I don’t find any similar case. So I try to find it by myself. Hmm, after some “experiments” I found that one of the add-ons, AVG Safe Search 8.0, is the problem. It’s not installed on my Portable FF, but on the original Firefox on the PC I use for working.

After the add-on is disabled and the browser restarted, it never crashed again. But err… I found this problem only occurs on my PC. Why? I don’t know… 😀

A Little Bug at WordPress

I’m developing a theme for wordpress now. The theme use the javascript color picker, like the WordPress default theme, Kubrick. There’s a button that will be the anchor for the Color Picker when it’s shown. I’m using DIV-type color picker, not the Window-type one, which means that the color picker is shown at a DIV element, not a new pop-up window. So much like Kubrick.

When I tried it up in Firefox, the color picker DIV is not shown up right under the button. The Error Console said that “error in parsing value top, bla bla bla”, means that the top property for the color picker DIV has a wrong value. FYI at Opera, that error doesn’t occur.

And then I try to take a look at the javascript file, colorpicker.js which is located inside wp-include/js directory. After some times, I found something missed at the function PopupWindow_showPopup that manages how will the DIV be shown.

At line 295, it said:

document.getElementById(this.divName).style.top = this.y;

See? The command to set the “top” property is incomplete. At Firefox, it needs a “px” if you want to change a size or dimension of an element. After I put the “px”, it works fine.

But of course, that’s not a suitable solution since I’ll release this theme, so the user of this theme (I hope there will be some users 😀 ) will have to change that file too. Fortunately, I can override that function. Owkey, but that makes my script seems so long. 😦

Actually, I’d like to report this little bug to WordPress team, but I find that’s not easy, so much things to do, instead of just send email to Matt and say “Hi, Matt, I found a bug at WordPress here, maybe you can fix it.” So I changed my mind at write it out here. And hopefully they will read this. 😛

Trying The Folks: Flock

Setelah membaca postingan simbok yang ini, saya jadi kepengen nyobain Flock, yang katanya dibikin pake teknologi Mozilla itu. Setelah saya unduh di websitenya dan saya install. Woh.. Bener-bener rasa Firefox!!

So, what is the difference? Just at the appearance?

Dan saya pun mulai menggerayangi browser itu… Hmm, lumayan, seperti yang ditulis simbok, ternyata Blog Editornya bekerja dengan baik. Tapi itu ketika saya coba di akun (?) saya yang di blogspot (oh, yes, I have). Ketika saya coba di blog saya yang pake hostingan sendiri, entah kenapa kok error terus. Katanya ndak isa login pake username sama password yang saya isi. Lha dalah??

Kemudian saya coba juga Feed Sidebarnya… Hmm, lumayan juga ini, ndak perlu pake Google Reader buat baca feed. Sayangnya… lantaran PC yang saya pakai di kantor ini di-Beku-Dalam-kan, setiap saya restart, feed-feed yang sudah saya add jadi hilang semua. Aneh, padahal folder instalasi sudah saya alihkan ke drive yang tidak di-Beku-Dalam-kan, tapi kok tetep ilang? Ada yang bisa bantu?

Jadi kesimpulannya, saya memang belum mencoba seluruh fitur yang ditawarkan Flock. Tapi dari dua fitur di atas yang telah saya pakai, sebenarnya juga bisa saya lakukan di Firefox, alias mbikin Firefox rasa Flock. Ya, cari aja addon-nya. Kalau mau blog editor, ada ScribeFire. Kalau mau feed reader, ada NewsFox (serta banyak yang lain-lain). Meski begitu, saya seneng pake browser ini, entah kenapa…
